Ercoupes aid
USA homeland security! Seven 1946 C and D models, are still serving as
"war birds" (PQ-15s) with The Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF),
part of the Alaskan National Guard. The ASDF Ercoupe pilots conduct
transportation flights to move MP's from various locations, fly aerial
photography missions using digital camera equipment, perform aerial
observation and control missions, and are often used for communication
platforms for multiple ground units.

Many thanks to Colonel M.E.
Reeves, Commander, 491st Aviation Regiment for this info. You can visit
the ASDF here at http://www.ak-prepared.com/asdf/.
More photos and an interesting note from Col. Reeves are on the
Ercoupe Owners Club site at: http://www.ercoupe.org/491st/491st.htm
Other
Ercoupe variations built under patents of Fred Weick. There was the
General Skyfarer, another two control (no rudders) twin tail, non-spinnable
tricycle landing gear airplane, and the
Aeronca "Chum", which had nearly the same spec's as the Ercoupe.
An
Ercoupe configured as a taildragger! These are pictures I took at Sun n
Fun back in '92, and they include a shot of Fred, as well. From the
front, it looks like a baby Swift! You can see photos of this unusual bird here.

According
to NASA, the very first successful U.S. rocket-assisted takeoff of an
aircraft was accomplished in an Ercoupe, in 1946. Would you have had the
guts to try it? Details here.
